A FAMILY AFFAIR: MOTHER AND SON WORK TOGETHER TO PRESERVE NAMPA HISTORY
Mike Watkins, owner of Mike’s Auto Clinic and his mother Wendy Miller, director of the Nampa Train Depot Museum are working together to raise money for the Canyon County Historical Society. Shortages in all areas of the economy have not missed our local history preservation groups, and the donations to their group have suffered.
Last year Wendy and Mike were touring the museum and discussing budget cuts, and what to do with some of the older pieces of history stored in the museum’s shed. Mike noticed an old relic coke machine in the corner. Finding out that it was still in operating condition, Mike suggesting to his mother that they should get the machine out of storage and put in his shop where people could come get a blast from the past. His mom agreed and they both saw an opportunity to benefit both parties. Now Local residents can get their car serviced at an old time facility and have a New Bottle of old Classic Coke from A Classic machine.
“We have the Coke Machine here already and it is working out great, we get comments on it all time, ” Mr. Watkins wanted to create a “retro” feeling in his shop to remind his clients of good old time service and create a fun, friendly environment for his customers. “This machine will provide monthly donations to help preserve Nampa history and the Idaho quality of life. I have been a lifelong native and my mother has lived here in the state for over 55 years. It feels good to do our part to help preserve Idaho's rich history for future generations.”
The museum has loaned Mike’s Auto Clinic the Coke machine. Mrs. Miller guesses the machine comes from the 60’s. The museum is supplying the Coke for the machine and all proceeds from the sales will be given directly back to the Canyon County Historical Society. Mike’s Auto Clinic is donating the power and labor to maintain the machine. Mr. Watkins has been in business in Nampa for 5 years now, however, the building he owns has been a local auto shop for over 50 years. “Everyone benefits from this exchange”, stated Mr. Watkins. “My customers get to see this beautiful machine in my shop, refresh themselves and at the same time donate to the local community. This idea has been in the works for a while now so we are excited to finally have the machine here and be able to donate to the Historical Society. The Coke sells for a $1.00 per bottle. All are welcome to stop by and Mike’s Auto Clinic, donate a buck, have refreshing Coke, and support Nampa History. |
